02.11.2026Safe Zone – When Animation Feels Like a War Documentary
Safe Zone is an animated short film about war, desperation, and how hunger can push you to risk your life. Because, fundamentally, you're already risking it. Not eating, hiding in a hole in the concrete, you're literally already risking your life and starving to death.
What struck me the most was just how incredibly well-made this short film is. It looks like a photograph. Seriously, it doesn't feel like a cartoon, it feels like a live-action film. The bloodstains on the walls, the rubble, every single detail is so realistic that it genuinely feels like you're watching a war documentary. I would never have described this film as animation.
And then there's the little girl's anxiety. You can actually feel it, her desperation, her fear, but also that sort of defiance in her decision to leave her hiding place to get some food. Because risking your life to eat, when you're already starving to death, becomes almost a necessity rather than a choice.
There's also a more psychological interpretation that crossed my mind: hiding can also mean hiding the desperation and anxiety that eventually push her to come out of her shelter. It's a very personal interpretation, and I could be completely wrong, but that's what the film made me feel.
And I really appreciate what the director has managed to achieve with artificial intelligence. At a time when this technology faces so much criticism, I find it interesting that it has been used in such a positive and realistic way, managing to tell something deeply human.
Safe Zone made me feel an incredible amount of anxiety, precisely because what I was watching felt real. And perhaps that's what I appreciated the most: despite being an animated short film, to me, it felt like watching a real war documentary.
