The Invite, an evening between love, sarcasm and routine

Olivia Wilde returns behind the camera with the direction of The Invite, an American comedy but with a british taste on life, love and routine. The whole film takes place in one apartment and the chaotic style of photography, along with a tight humor, makes the perfect and never restrictive setting.

On stage only four people, two couples. They seem to live a totally different lifestyle. And maybe, just for this reason, they attract each other so much to get to spend an evening together with nuns of jokes, bang and response and sarcasm.

Penelope Cruz fills the screen, scene and evening. As we have seen in the past in Modern Family, there is nothing like a seductive Spanish accent to turn on passion and anger...

The side frames, the use of mirrors and the almost obsessive photograph make the viewer feel a stranger that should not be present but that, at the same time, can not really look. For the duration of the evening we will ask ourselves whether the four are really friends or if they were to spend that moment together without really knowing each other. The jokes, the passing of time and the introspection turn the evening into a continuous race against routine, misunderstandings and despair. Each dialogue adds a dowel to the relationships between the characters, making each short silence as significant as the words.

Continuing on this line we arrive at a final in which the character of Penelope Cruz feels exactly the same feeling: it is located in the position of adviser, almost psychologist (after all it does it by profession.. ), but he comes out saying that she, after all, is not living that moment as a professional, but only as a friend. What happens in the middle remains to be discovered, knowing that the film remains classified as comedy, but remains in the heart and mind also for how it treats personal life, relationships, ambition and sex.

Coming out in Italy in September, but I recommend the vision in the original language.
